Study of a novel

Develop your appreciation of a writer’s craft through the study of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon. You will also work on group performances of a scene from Simon Stephen’s play.

 Assessment: One or more of the following written tasks:

·  An alternative opening

·  A letter to Christopher

·  An essay comparing the novel and the play

 Study of film and fairy tales

Explore film techniques and effects and the features and purposes of traditional fairy tales.

 Assessment:

An Essay “How do the makers of Shrek use techniques to change and challenge the roles and ideas of traditional fairy tales?”

Global English, Language Variety and Change:

Explore the ways in which the English language changes and varies over time and has developed around the world. investigate your own languages and personal idiolect. You will also study the language and design of children’s picture books and produce your own.

 Assessment:

·  A piece of reflective writing about your own idiolect

·  A children’s picture book, and written evaluation.

Crafting Writing

Appreciate the art of narrative and the short story using Lucy Blue by David Almond and a selection of short stories from around the world. You will develop understanding of writers’ techniques, genre and theme.

 Assessment:

A short story, using a range of techniques to create atmosphere and explore ideas

Preparation for End of year Exam

Practice comprehension and writing skills

Assessment:

·  The exam

Poetry:

Enjoy a range of poems and songs from around the world, focusing on specific poetic techniques. You will also write your own poetry.

Personal Reading:

Read a classic novel, developing your vocabulary and comprehension skills. You will practise summary writing and write a creative response. You will select some personal reading for the summer holidays.
